Friend can’t see my chat messages in game, but I can see them.

When my friend invites me to a Minecraft world through Xbox live, I can use open chat, but apparently she cannot see my messages. I can see hers. I’ve tried deleting the app and reinstalling. We have both tried restarting our devices. I have checked my Xbox live privacy settings and the “communicate with voice, text, or invites”  is set to “everyone”. Why can’t she see what I’m typing?
