Game freezes when entering nether portal

Sometimes when entering a nether portal the game will freeze and force me to close and open the game. The game will stay frozen and will not crash and will only display the last frame of gameplay before the loading screen is supposed to appear. Most of the time the nether portal works correctly and I have no clue what causes the random freeze.
