Lag in the nether has become far worse since the update

Before 1.16.100 I only occasionally experienced lag in the nether.  Now it is virulent.  Blocks break a second after I hit them, ghasts are teleporting and even something as simple as opening a chest takes nearly a second.  This is a solo survival game, no realms, no other players.
