Items in chests and inventory despawn/disappear

After playing for a while, my husband and I log out of our game, and log back in to discover items that have been put into chests have disappeared. Magical fishing rods (multiple times), obsidian, potatoes, sponges, cooked salmon (multiple stacks of 64)
