Trees not dropping saplings or fruit

When you destroy the trunk of a tree, the leaves will disappear and drop saplings and fruit. However, ever since the last update the only way I've been able to harvest either was by manually destroying the leaf blocks by hand- furthermore it seems much more difficult to find any saplings or fruit doing that as well.
