Can't tame llamas

I have 2 llamas in a pen that I want to tame and breed. I ride one of them and I don't get angry smoke to tell me I didn't tame it and I didn't get any happy hearts to show that I did tame the llama. Is this a bug or am I just not getting how to tame llamas?
