No sound after switching apps (and switching back) while using AirPods

To reproduce:

1. Open Minecraft
2. Connect AirPods
3. switch to another app or home screen
4. switch back to minecraft
5. sound no longer working.

Notes: I have checked mute switch and sound settings, no luck. Can get sound back by force quitting the app and opening it again.
