FPS drops while looking at tickingarea in Monsters of the Deep on Switch

Minecraft  - Release_1001349

Summary:

When playing Monsters of the Deep on Nintendo Switch, looking in the direction of the ticking area underneath the main room of the base drops FPS to unplayable levels. We initially thought this was due to the entities that spawn in this area later in the game, but we recently confirmed it happening during the intro of the game before any entities have spawned there.

Impact:

Players on Nintendo Switch will be negatively impacted by the performance in this section of the map. We chose to push through and release the map because the issue doesn't directly impact gameplay, but you really have to slog through the intro segment, which will cause some players to get frustrated and quit the game. There's nothing about this issue that seems like we've done anything to cause it in this map in particular, other than just putting in a ticking area.

Repro Steps:

  1. Open Monsters of the Deep on switch
  2. Start the game and proceed to follow Dr. Alan Columbus into the main area
  3. Notice the issue start as you turn the corner towards reception (Sasha)

Observed Results:

Really bad FPS drops

Expected Results:

Consistent FPS throughout
