Persona Item Non-rendering Triggered by 'player.entity.json' File Modifications

Partner Rank: 1

Partner Team Reporting:
Builders Horizon

Verification Builds:
Minecraft Bedrock Codebase, All Platforms & Versions from 1.16.0 to 1.20.12

Affected Versions:
  - 1.20, 1.19, 1.18, 1.17, 1.16

  • Platforms: Multiple (iOS, Android, Xbox, Windows 10, etc.)

Regression Builds:
Functioned correctly as of: 1.16.0.64 Beta

Summary:

  • Implementing a resource pack that includes "player.entity.json" reverts player skins to the default Steve model. This results in players being unable to view or enjoy their purchased content, specifically all Persona/Character Creator items. The items fail to render if the "player.entity.json" is present. Even minor modifications to the "player.entity.json" disrupt the player's experience with persona and potential emotes.

Affects currently Live Content: Yes

Impact:

  • This bug gravely affects the user experience by nullifying their selected persona items, hindering gameplay. The recurrent nature of this problem across several versions implies a profound underlying issue demanding swift rectification. Players might start doubting the reliability of persona and emote features, especially when investing in content. The problem persists even with minute adjustments to the "player.entity.json", like texture modifications, scaling changes, new animation inclusions, or even when the file remains unaltered and sourced directly from the original game resource pack.

Repro Steps:
1. Enable a resource pack that modifies a player's animation, and texture, or even includes an untouched "player.entity.json".
2. Commence a world session with the activated resource pack.
3. In 3rd person view or arms paper doll mode, examine the player's skin and see that prior persona items are no longer visible or rendered.

Observed Results:

  • Regardless of customization, player skin, and persona items revert to the Steve model. There are instances where the textures seem distorted or potentially compromised.

Expected Results:

  • Players should see their selected skin intact, and all animations should operate seamlessly without any malfunction.
