Summary:
On the map Horse School the tutorial fails to start if the player's render distance is not set to the lowest setting on Windows 10. It seems the tickingarea fails to load under these conditions.
This also happens on our maps Modern Furniture, Space Adventure and some upcoming content. The map’s tutorials are essential to the experience we want to provide in these worlds.
Impact:
The player does not get the experience they purchased
Repro Steps:
Go to Settings and raise your render distance higher than 12 (I set mine to the max 80)
Start up a fresh copy of the map Horse School from the Minecraft Marketplace
- Walk up to the NPC titled Expert Equestrian on your left and interact with them to begin the tutorial
- The tutorial will fail to begin and the NPC will do nothing.
- Save and quit the map and exit back to the settings tab
- Lower your render distance to the minimum setting
- Start another fresh copy of the map Horse School from the Minecraft Marketplace.
- Walk up to the NPC titled Expert Equestrian on your left and interact with them to begin the tutorial
- The tutorial will begin and the NPC will begin to interact with the player as intended.
Observed Results:
When the render distance is set too high some of our maps fail to perform correctly. This causes a large amount of feedback from players to our support team and makes our products appear broken when they are not. The default render distance setting on most builds of Minecraft is set too high for these maps to function correctly.
Expected Results:
For the map to function as intended

1.16.0.10004
Notes:
When we test our template this does not occur as seen in my video in the link above. I have the render distance set to 80 and the map functions correctly. When I download the copy from the store the problem occurs and is remedied by lowering the render distance to the lowest setting every time. This seems related to the issue I reported here MCM-1266 In the map Yeti Horror the items needed to play the map do not appear on a Realm or if the render distance is set to 12 or higher on a PS4. - Jira (mojang.com)
