game won't start

I open the Minecraft launcher and hit play. (I have tried both 1.13 and 1.12.2, both had the same result.) The Minecraft launcher tab closes, as usual, and the loading Minecraft.exe tab opens, the actual game tab. It loads, as usual. But it never cuts to the menu screen no matter how long I wait. It just sits and loads.
