Unable to play Minecraft on the new patch - please advise

Minecraft loads into the launcher upon clicking the icon in the task bar.

When I press play, java quits unexpectedly + my game crashes.

 

Please advise on how to play Minecraft on this new patch!

PS - I've had no problems loading and playing Minecraft previous to today when trying to load into this new patch.
