Launcher will not let you play online

Whenever the launcher is started, I only see the buttons: 'Log out' & 'Play offline'. I have verified I am connected to the internet and the 'Login Status' states that both the login and the multiplayer is 'Online, no problems detected'. In this case, why am I not showed the 'Play' button. (I have tried to 'Play Offline' and whenever I try to connect to a server I get the bad login error).
