New 1.6 launcher will not work on a Mac OSX version 10.6.8

Launcher is unable to launch game on my computer

What I expected to happen was...:
Game to launch

What actually happened was...:
Crafting table logo appeared for half a second on the tool bar then vanished and the text below was displayed

Steps to Reproduce:
1. open the launcher on Mac OSX 10.6.8
2. Select play
