Skin change won't work

I wanted a change in my minecraft skin, so I downloaded a skin that i had created to my desktop. I went into the minecraft launcher and clicked skins. I selected "browse skins" and it showed me the options to get the skin from. I clicked on desktop and selected the skin and pressed save. After that, I excitedly went iton minecraft to find...my skin as a steve. I repleated this process six times with the same results.
