Unable to install, "'minecraft' is not a valid short file name."

When trying to open the Minecraft Installer, it is unable to complete. The installer starts computing space requirements, then immediately gives the error message "'minecraft' is not a valid short file name." The setup wizard then ends prematurely; no other error message is given.
