first time user.. getting Minecraft launcher has stopped working error

first time user.. downloaded Minecraft but getting Minecraft launcher has stopped working error. How can I solve this issue? Is this compatible with x64 OS? Not sure what the affects version means.. I do have Windows 7 x64 OS and java 8.131 version
