Minecraft outputs sound to wrong playback device

I noticed that I did not have all sounds when playing. Most of them were there. Missing for instance were menu clicking sounds, music (general, no music at all), wood chopping sound, likely other sounds too.
Sounds that were present were footsteps, grass block chopping, mobs, ...

Upon further investigation, I found that when I change my default playback device from my X-Fi to the AMD High Definition Audio device (presumably supplied by the videocard as it seems to be part of the R9 390 driver suite), all sounds were there again. Problem is: my X-Fi is hooked up to the 5.1 set and the AMD High Definition device only plays back stereo.

NOTE THAT I HAVE NO CLUE WHAT VERSION I HAVE TO SELECT FROM DROP DOWN LIST. My game tells me it's 1.11.2 ?
