"An unexpected issue has occurred" while game output log does not show

When trying to "Play" from the new launcher, I immediately get an error message saying "GAME CRASH: An unexpected issue occurred and the game has crashed. We're sorry for the inconvenience."

Followed instructions to get output file, but it only shows the message "Waiting for log output..." and nothing else. No crash file in the .minecraft directory.
