Minecraft doesn't start (when it does it says not responding)

When I open the launcher (I want to switch back to the old one) it doesn't let me play minecraft. It doesn't start, and on the rare occasion of starting it says Minecraft 1.8.8 (Not Responding)!!! Please help me! Or just help me get the old one back!!!
