after game loads it crashes with a java "exception access violation" error

game loaded, when i began to play the game crashed with fatal error message in the log box.
1. updated java
2. updated windows
3. restarted computer
4. uninstalled and reinstalled minecraft

got same results after each step

Minecraft launcher says it is version 1.0.1.0 which is not an option in the pulldown menu above.
