re-downloads itself every game start-up

Every time I start Minecraft up, the launcher downloads v1.6.48 unpacks it then the game starts/plays normally. But it does it every time, and when I try to list it above in the version box, it says it isn't a valid version. It just downloads itself each time and doesn't get the latest version.
Suggestions??
