Launcher won't open versions later that 1.8.3

Before I was playing on the latest version of minecraft, which at the time was 1.8.6. I expected to be able to play. My brother who shares the computer, also plays MC with the latest versions.

However, when I pushed the "Play" button, the launcher disappeared like it always does and the MC Icon appeared in my dock. But it closed and the launcher reappeared with the "Game Output" Tab. The same happened when I switched to my brothers account. I tried logging out of all accounts with no luck.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open MC Launcher
2. Change to any version later than 1.8.3, including latest version
3. Press play
