Minecraft won't start

I have never had problems running Minecraft before. In this past week I recently updated to a new version of Java, from 7u51 or so to the newest version 8u31. Now when I open Minecraft, the launcher will open, but when I click "Play" it disappears and then the game doesn't start at all.
