Can't download launcher files

I tried to run Minecraft today and the launcher got stuck on downloading an update.
I deleted the .minecraft folder and tried to re-install the game, but now whenever I try to run the launcher it gets stuck on downloading the launcher updates.
The internet is working fine and I played the game yesterday with no problems.
