Launcher won't connect to minecraft services so I can't load the actual game

I have purchased Minecraft Java edition for $39.95 AUD from the Minecraft site and been directed to download the launcher.

While I am connected to strong internet, the launcher appears with the error "Oh no! Something went wrong, and we couldn't connect to minecraft services.

When I try to connect from the account page of the launcher, it appears with the error "The Launcher is currently offline, so we cannot log you in. Check your internet connection and try again."

I have connected and reconnected the router and tried on multiple different internet connections and am sure it is not a connection on my part. I have also tried restarting my macbook multiple times, restarting the launcher multiple times, opening the launcher from the terminal and nothing is working.

This is very frustrating as it is preventing me from downloading and playing the game I have purchased. Is anyone experiencing something similar and can help me with this?
