Minecraft Launcher Failing to update

So i launch minecraft, it says its launching 1.14 or whatver the cureent one is but i ope minecraft and its the past version. I can't play with sound and the whole thing is laggy. there is no interface or option anywhere (and i mean anywhere) where i can manually click to update tothe newest verison or stop the game from launching an older version plz help thank you!
