Minecraft Launcher says "Updating Minecraft Launcher Downloading Update Files" But does not open Launcher

After I press Minecraft the "Updating Minecraft Launcher     Downloading Update Files" window (which, I gather, is quite normal) and loads for a few minutes, and then just closes, not opening the Launcher. After that it shows the "App Quit Unexpectedly " Window.
