play button and log-out button grayed out

I click on the mine craft logo and the launcher opens. but none of the profiles load, the play button and log out button are grey and can't be clicked. and on the second tab of the launcher the last words that are loading are "refreshing remote version list" then it stops and does not do anything no matter how long I wait.
