Minecraft launcher fails with "Oh no! Something went wrong and we couldn't connect to the Minecraft services"

I keep getting "Oh no! Something went wrong and we couldn't connect to the Minecraft services" (it is also asking me to buy the game) when the old launcher is working perfectly fine. (try again does not work, neither does a PC restart)
