Trying to launch client from the launcher crashes the whole computer to a black screen

I am having an issue where the launcher will say the game has crashed unexpectedly when I try to start the client. When I try again, it crashes the whole computer to a black screen and I have to reboot. Trying to start 1.17.1.

UPDATE: this has become exponentially worse, exiting with an error once, maybe twice, then crashing the whole computer. When I restart, login information is totally wiped out, and when I do login, the Play button won't display - there is just an error that something went wrong, try again, but clicking on try again doesn't do anything. I have to close and restart the launcher. I have not been able to play even with a total wipe and clean install of both Java and Minecraft.
