launching 1.7.2 in multiplayer

When attempting to launch version 1.7.2 in multiplayer mode the launcher freezes and the program becomes unresponsive and I have to force the program to close. If I shift to version 1.6 I can launch and play with no problems. I am running the latest version of java.
