After update to 1.17 launcher error 'OpenJDK binary has stopped working'

After installing update to Minecraft 1.17, Minecraft will no longer launch. Instead I get a 'OpenJDK binary has stopped working' error, and I am booted back to the main launch screen.

Updating NVidia video drivers to current release has had no effect.

Other games and applications installed on PC still work as usual. Just Minecraft has developed an issue, and only after being updated. Previous version launched and ran perfectly.
