Launcher unable to create java virtual machine

After clicking "Play" on the launcher, it attempts to load the Java environment, but delivers the error: Could not create the Java Virtual Machine.

I have tried all the workarounds - running Java as administrator; establishing a system variable for Java memory; even uninstalled Java and installed the new Java 16; all to no avail.
