launcher does not start (no error message, no log)

Under Ubuntu 20.04 minecraft launcher quits without error message and without creating a log file. If I remove my .minecraft directory a new directory is created containing only an empty launcher directory and nothing else. This happens under KDE as well as Gnome.

I have tried the .deb package as well as the .tar.gz version.
