[MCL-17175] launcher will not start for second user on linux

Installed the latest launcher from .deb on the minecraft site. For one user, there is no isse. I have three users (all with different linux account names, and three different Minecraft purchases), the launcher fails to start for the other two users. It looks like a permission problem based on the console output, but I cannot figure out where. The launcher has the correct permissions in /opt/ , I wiped the .minecraft directory in the user directory, still same issue.
I also downloaded the .tar.gz version, expanded it into a local directory and executed that copy with the same result.
I can successfully install a previous version and all three accounts work.
.deb package says version 887.
