Launcher fails to launch with message 'unable to update native launcher'

just installed the launcher, and run it, so it has to update to the launcher on its first try so I just wait but sometime later, it said "failed to update native launcher minecraft." so I tried fixing it, watched a bunch of youtube vids and stuff. didnt do much progress.
