Minecraft keeps crashing on our new MacBook Air

We just bought a new MacBook Air. We had our data migrated. When this first happened, we downloaded a new Minecraft from the minecraft site.

Right when we try to "join world" from the launcher, Minecraft is crashing. It says: Sorry an error occured, game crashed.

We used to play on an older Mac Powerbook with no issues. I don't know how to figure out what Java edition we have or if that is the issue?

Kids devastated! Help!
