Unable to allocate more memory to minecraft on some systems

I have been unable to allocate more RAM to minecraft through the launcher, despite the option being available in the interface. when I attempt to add any more than 176 MB of RAM it says that it is unable to acquire the recources when it tries to launch minecraft. Also I've noticed that other people with other environments on their computers are having a similar problem.
