Minecraft 1.12.2 and older crashes my game

There are many things I love about 1.12.2, and usually revisit it. But recently, every time I try to open up Minecraft 1.12.2 or anything older (even the very first version of Minecraft) the launcher instantly crashes. Every. Single. Time. I don't know if it is because of my computer or because I haven't updated it to it's latest version. Help please.

Also, I am quite confused what the numbers are supposed to mean in Affects Version/s
