Launcher doesn't save credentials or custom settings

Minecraft launcher does not save my login credentials even when Keep me logged in is checked.  Additionally, any custom installations or settings I try to add (e.g., adding a specific older version or changing the command line options) does not save after closing the launcher.  I've tried reinstalling but it didn't fix the problem.
