Minecraft wont launch

I cant launch minecraft. i have tried uninstalling, redownloading java, trying a different release. no matter what i do, i can only get as far as clicking the start for the launcher and i get to see the Mojang loading bar. it will then progress 3/4 of the way, freeze, crash, and send me back to the launcher. i have run out of ideas. this has been an issue since before 1.16 as well
