Crashes when trying to play

Hello there, I'm having problems with my minecraft. I took over my boyfriend's old computer and had Minecraft already pre-downloaded from the past. We can log in, select settings and set the version to play on, but when we click play it crashes as soon as it's finalized. We're not sure what the issue is, but it would be appreciated
