launcher just keeps crashing and doesn't open the game

i just bought minecraft for my macbook and i did everything exactly how the directions told me to do but when i click on "play" on the minecraft launcher the loading bar fills up to 100% then closes and then reopens with the message "Game crashed an unexpected issue occurred and the game has crashed. We're sorry for the inconvenience"
