i died and lost ALL of my stuff..... again

i have a survival world and i was going caving and i was going to the surface and i drowned... i respawned and retraced my steps to find NOTHING!!!! 

 

i had just found a bunch of diamonds. and i had some pretty valuable stuff on me. 

 

i just wondered if your stuff ususally despawns after you suffocate? this has happened many many times before, and i have lost SO MANY ITEMS because of this! 

 

sorry if it's not a thing and i kinda wasted your time.....
