Game/launcher crashes when trying to load 1.12.2

When trying to launch Minecraft using 1.12.2 it'll minimize or disappear like it's about to show the white Mojang loading screen, but then comes back with a message.

An unexpected issue occurred and the game has crashed. We're sorry for the inconvenience.

If I launch the game in version 1.15.1 (latest) it loads just fine. However, I'm trying to connect to a RLCraft server that requires the client to be 1.12.2, so running latest is not an option.

 

I'm running the Linux version of Minecraft. Linux Mint 19.2 Cinnamon (4.2.4)

I've uninstalled Minecraft by simply uninstalling the application and by uninstalling the application and removing the .minecraft folder.  - This has had no effect.
