Login required for accessed profiles

With version 1.1.1 of the Minecraft launcher, a login is required before accessing a profile that has not been accessed since this update. I was simply wondering, why were the accounts previously set to each profile forgotten? And why can't we view the newsfeed without logging in?

Probably not a bug, I understand, but it would be nice to have an explanation for this slightly irksome feature.
