Whenever I open the launcher the Launcher functions normally and when i click play it closes the launcher and I get a message saying Minecraft Launcher quit unexpectedly

Whenever I open the launcher the Launcher functions normally and when i click play it closes the launcher and I get a message saying Minecraft Launcher quit unexpectedly. This has happened ever since I downloaded the game around a month ago. I really want to play, Can anyone help?
