Minecraft Launcher does not update

I just updated Minecraft Java on my Mac. When I start the launcher, there is a message,

"[Update] A new version of the Launcher will be automatically installed the next time the launcher starts."

However, the launcher never updates and the message never goes away. I tried deleting the Minecraft.app from my Applications folder and reinstalling, but the problem persists.
