trying to play online but the launcher says theres no connection

I installed the Minecraft launcher today and when I go to play with my friends, I get stopped at the Minecraft launcher because it says "play offline" I first noticed the message at the top left sayng "no connection" I believe 200meg wifi is enough to run Minecraft.
